Who is this substack for?

People who are interested in careers in applied economics (including agricultural, environmental, regional, or development economics) and interdisciplinary job opportunities relevant to the field. At present, the geographic scope is mainly opportunities based in the US, Canada, and Europe, and the industry scope is primarily academia, government, and NGOs.

Why create this substack?

There are a number of relevant job boards and listservs for applied economists, but it takes some time to figure them all out and many jobs for which applied economists would be well qualified are not posted on them. Thus, it can be challenging for people in our profession—particularly students new to the field—to find all opportunities relevant to them. This Substack is intended to serve as an additional source for job listings to avoid cross-listings and high levels of listserv traffic in the profession. It should be considered a complement to existing job boards such as: AEA JOE, the AAEA Job Board, the AERE Career Center, the AFHVS Job Listings, and others.

Can I get a weekly digest of posts?

If you would prefer to subscribe to the Weekly Digest option instead of receiving an e-mail each time a job is posted, log into your Substack account and go into your Settings (in the top right menu under your avatar) and then click on this newsletter in your list of subscriptions. You should then see a list of notification options. You can unsubscribe from the main listing by toggling off the button in the top row for Applied Econ Jobs and subscribe to the Weekly Digest by toggling on the button for Weekly Digest in the next row down.

Who is creating the content on this substack?

The job postings on this Substack are sourced from relevant listservs, LinkedIn, BlueSky, internet search, and occasionally from postings sent directly to the substack manager. All inquiries about job postings should be directed to contacts mentioned in the job advertisement itself, not the manager of this substack. If you are an employer wanting to post a job, or if you would like a posting removed (e.g., if there was an error in content or you would like for it not to be published in this format), please contact the current substack manager, Zoë Plakias, at plakiaz@wwu.edu.

Who is currently managing this substack?
